It’s possible… in India

In south west India there is a state named Kerala. In this green and beautiful state there is something special going on. Entrepreneurs are starting more businesses than ever before. In Kerala people are living a good life, there is a high quality education system and people are used to a healthy lifestyle.  Furthermore it’s not as expensive and crowded as in the larger cities in India. Here we can see an impressive development within the business sector for the last 20 years. 1990 the government of Kerala began to build what today is globally known as Technopark. Technopark began as an idea to stimulate business growth in Kerala. At that time it was just a forest of palm trees where Technopark is located now. Today 23 years later we can see an impressive technology park in the green environment rising up towards the sky. Inside Technopark we can find the second most successful incubator in the world (The Technopolicy Network). There is a team of about 10 people working fulltime with incubating about 45 companies on site and have about 25 virtual incubatees outside Technopark. From 2006 when the incubator inside Technopark was founded the incubator has helped more than 160 companies to grow strong, with a success rate of over 90%. All those companies are together providing work for about 4500 people.

I have now spent over 20 days at this beautiful location. What strikes me most is the including culture in the whole entrepreneurial ecosystem. People are interacting and helping each other in a warm and open way. In meetings with entrepreneurs I have discovered a passion and drive to build not just a strong company, but to build a better society. In meetings with the staff of the incubator I can see the same passion, but also a creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to continually evolve the incubator and the whole entrepreneurial ecosystem. During a meeting with Dr. K.C. Chandrasekharan Nair(The founder of the incubator at Technopark) he is explaining how they work and at the same time drawing Da Vinci-like sketches of the main concepts behind the incubators success. The thoughts and models on the paper they have now realized and brought to life. It is just beautiful to see how it all comes together and makes sense, on a single piece of paper. 20130215_155927 20130222_12340009,2,2013, More tech incubators for State, The Hindu, Pg-02
